Belgium: SPIE to install 180 Tesla Megapack 3 energy storage systems for one of Belgium’s largest battery parks

INDUSTRY

Anderlecht, 27 May 2026SPIE Belgium, the Belgian subsidiary of SPIE, the independent European leader in multi-technical services in the areas of energy and communications, announces that it has been selected by Tesla for the installation and grid connection of 180 battery containers as part of a large-scale battery storage project in Kluisbergen (Ruien). Developed by Storm, the project is among the largest battery parks currently being built in Belgium.

A key project for the energy transition

The battery park in Kluisbergen will play an important role in stabilising the Belgian electricity grid. By storing energy during periods of surplus renewable generation and releasing it again during peak demand, the project contributes to a flexible and resilient energy system.

With a storage capacity of several hundred megawatt-hours and a total project value of more than EUR 100 million, the battery park positions itself as strategic infrastructure within Belgium’s energy transition.

SPIE Belgium responsible for installation and high-voltage connection

Commissioned by Tesla, SPIE Belgium is responsible for the complete electrical integration of the installation. Tesla supplies the Megapacks, while SPIE handles their placement, cabling and connection to the high-voltage grid.

  • installation of 180 Tesla Megapacks
  • deployment of extensive medium- and high-voltage cabling
  • connection to transformers and the electricity grid
  • construction of a full high-voltage substation
  • integration with the 380 kV transmission network

“This is a typical example of a project where several technical disciplines come together: from heavy cable infrastructure to high-voltage connections. We are responsible for the complete integration of the battery containers up to the grid, including the construction of the high-voltage substation,” says Jochen Dewaele, Project Manager at SPIE Belgium. “The scale of the project and the complexity of the grid connection make this a particularly challenging undertaking. At the same time, it perfectly demonstrates how our expertise contributes to the energy transition.”

Tesla Megapack 3 in Europe

A distinctive element of this project is the deployment of Tesla’s latest battery energy storage system: Megapack 3. The Kluisbergen battery park will be one of the first projects in Europe where this new technology is applied at scale.

This new generation Megapack 3 delivers improved performance, higher energy density and more efficient integration into large-scale energy infrastructure.

Technically challenging site with strategic location

The site in Ruien, located on the premises of a former power plant, offers significant advantages for energy storage thanks to its proximity to existing high-voltage infrastructure. At the same time, the grid connection presents substantial technical challenges.

The project requires complex cable connections and close coordination with the grid infrastructure to ensure safe and efficient injection of energy into the electricity network.

Planning

Civil works have already started. SPIE Belgium will begin the installation and grid connection works in November 2026. Full completion, including testing and commissioning, is scheduled for the end of 2027.
